link to Wheeler County

Just clicking on this Mapquest™ link will put you in the middle of Wheeler County. You have plenty of opportunities to explore the amazing countryside of the county.

There are two direct routes that vary only slightly in distance and time, depending on how much sight-seeing you plan to do along the way.

From Portland
: The faster of the two is to follow I-84 east to Arlington(Exit 137), turn right (south) on Oregon Highway 19 through the rolling agricultural lands of Gilliam county thru Condon. Continue south on HWY 19 another 20 scenic miles to Fossil.

From Central Oregon: If you prefer to head north from Bend or Redmond, follow US 97 north to Madras, and then continue on US 97 20 miles past Madras to Oregon HWY 293 towards the small hamlet of Antelope. Then turn right on Oregon 218, marked for Fossil via the John Day river crossing at Clarno.

Another option is to head northeast from Bend towards Prineville on Oregon HWY 126. Once in Prineville follow US HWY 26 through the scenic ponderosa pine forests of the Ochocos and eventually descend to the charming town of Mitchell.
